DICK ALLEN

Nicknamed “Crash” and “The Wampum Walloper,” Dick Allen was one of baseball’s top sluggers in the 1960s and 70s. A seven-time All-Star, he began his career with the Philadelphia Phillies and won the 1964 National League Rookie of the Year. In 1972 he was the American League MVP with the Chicago White Sox. Allen’s career .534 slugging percentage was among his era’s highest in an age of comparatively modest offensive production. The Phillies retired Allen’s uniform number 15 in 2020, a few months before his death. In 2025, he will be inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
