EFFA MANLEY
Effa L. Manley, the “First Lady of Black Baseball,” was co-owner and business manager of the Newark Eagles from 1936 to 1948. Noted for running one of the most professional organizations in the Negro Leagues, Manley used her position with Newark to crusade for civil rights. Her club was usually a top-division team and won the Negro League World Series in 1946 under the guidance of Biz Mackey. In 2006, she posthumously became the first (and as of 2024, only) woman inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
