THE DIAMOND KING

THE DIAMOND KING is a feature length documentary about “the Picasso of Baseball,” Dick Perez. For over 20 years, Dick Perez was the official artist of the Baseball Hall of Fame, painting the game's history and every Hall of Famer – a project he continues into his 80s. Director Marq Evans tells the fascinating story of this childhood immigrant whose portraits transformed the commemoration of America's most iconic pastime.

THE DIAMOND KING - Official Trailer

In 2024, THE DIAMOND KING screened a “sneak peek” at a handful of very special venues and events around the country that played an integral part in Dick Perez’s illustrious career. The first stop was in Cleveland at the National Sports Collectors Convention, where Dick had previously been a special guest and is beloved by the collecting audience. From there, the film screened in Minneapolis at the SABR (Society of American Baseball Research) Convention. Dick has been a devoted member of SABR for decades and credits the organization with being a tremendous research tool for his work. The film went on to screen at the beautiful Grandstand Theater in Cooperstown, NY at the National Baseball Hall of Fame, where Dick was the official artist for 20 years. In November of 2024, THE DIAMOND KING screened at the incredible Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City. The event was hosted by museum President, Bob Kendrick, and honored Dick and his works of Negro League heroes he has painted over the years.

To commemorate those screenings (as well as Dick’s time as the official artist of the Philadelphia Phillies), the filmmakers created a limited set of jumbo baseball cards from Dick’s paintings related to those specific locations and organizations. The complete set features 35 Hall of Famers and some of Dick’s most beautiful paintings to date. A complete checklist is below.
