MARTIN DIHIGO

Martín Dihigo could play every position on the diamond with equal brilliance. They used to say his only weakness was that he could not play two positions at the same time. Known as “El Maestro,” he had a warm, friendly personality. Dihigo possessed great speed and an exceptionally strong arm that allowed him to play all nine positions skillfully. Playing in the Mexican League in 1938, he led the league with a 0.90 ERA and also won the batting crown with a .387 mark. While he spent 12 seasons in the Negro Leagues, Dihigo became a national institution in his native Cuba where he served as minister of sport after his retirement.
