WALTER JOHNSON

Only Cy Young won more than the 417 victories Walter Johnson collected in his 21 seasons with the Washington Senators. Using pinpoint control and an easy sidearm delivery, Johnson compiled 10 successive seasons of 20 or more victories, often leading the American League in wins, complete games, innings, strikeouts, and shutouts. Johnson still holds the record for most career shutouts with 110. He also lost a record 26 games by a 1-0 score. His thundering fastball earned him the nickname “Big Train,” while his modesty and friendly demeanor inspired the Washington sportswriters to dub him “Sir Walter” and the “White Knight.” When his remarkable career was o er, Johnson turned to managing first int he minors and later with the Senators.
